Israel and Hezbollah exchange attacks as fighting spreads in Lebanon

Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah have escalated their cross-border fighting. Israel has begun a limited ground raid into southern Lebanon, while Hezbollah has ramped up rocket attacks on Israeli soldiers and positions near the border.

The conflict has killed nearly 400 people in Lebanon, with the first Israeli military casualties now reported. A Lebanese cabinet minister has warned that Israel's actions may be effectively splitting the country in two. Human Rights Watch says it has proof that Israel used banned white phosphorus munitions in southern Lebanon.
