The account of the independence movement
Alberta has paid into Confederation for generations and been repaid with contempt: an energy programme in 1980 that wrecked its economy, laws that block its pipelines, an emissions cap on its one great industry, and lectures from provinces that burn its oil. Votes do not help, because elections are decided before the count reaches the Rockies. A free Alberta would keep its own revenue, make its own laws and trade with whom it likes, the United States first. Talking to Washington is what any people preparing for independence would do.
