Brussels overreaches; nations and voters are right to resist

The position holds that Brussels overreaches its mandate and that nations and voters are right to resist its centralising demands. Its advocates speak of national sovereignty and control, of net contributors and taxpayers, of paternalism, censorship and undemocratic treatment, and of the will of the people set against an establishment.

It appears in coverage of European political fragmentation, of the AfD and German political polarisation, of French political instability and the challenge to the political centre, of EU migration and asylum policy with its call for national border control, of the EU budget and regulatory sovereignty, and of Hungary and the rule of law. On the AfD it is framed as a complaint that exclusion is anti-democratic. Fifty-four publishers carry it on fragmentation, and on Hungary it also shows up in Russian coverage.

The competing position holds that deeper EU integration, solidarity and shared sovereignty are the answer, not fragmentation. A second position reads the same quarrels as proof of Western hypocrisy and decline. The events of recent months include the National Rally winning Senate seats in France, record AfD poll leads in Germany and heavy CDU losses in two state elections.
