The United States has used its control of the world's banking system to cut Iran off from trade, and presses other countries to do the same. Iran has kept selling oil, mostly to China, through a fleet of unmarked tankers and small banks. In September 2026 the United States sanctioned a Turkish bank over its Iran ties and, with the United Kingdom, imposed new sanctions on Iranian airlines. On 21 September Washington moved to shut down Iranian airlines worldwide and denied visas to Iran's delegation to the United Nations. Further sanctions on entities over Iran weapons procurement followed on 29 September. On 18 September Russia and China vetoed a UN monitoring arrangement for Iran sanctions. On 30 September Trump ruled out easing the sanctions.
