The Syrian army has continued a military advance into areas previously held by Kurdish forces in northern Syria. It has taken control of several towns and villages in the provinces of Aleppo and Raqqa, and entered the strategic town of Tabqa, which is home to a major hydroelectric dam on the Euphrates River.
The advance comes despite calls from the United States for the Syrian government to halt the operation. As the army moved forward, Kurdish forces withdrew from some positions. The military also reported seizing control of gas and oil fields in Deir Ezzor province and capturing the Tabqa military airport.
