The United States has asked for European help to guard the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil shipping route. The request came from President Donald Trump, who called for a maritime coalition.
However, the European Union has ruled out deploying a military mission there. Kaja Kallas, the EU's foreign policy chief, said there is 'no appetite' among member states to expand an existing naval mission to the strait. Instead, she is exploring a diplomatic plan with the United Nations, modeled on a past initiative for the Black Sea, to try to unblock the oil route.
