The Gulf states, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and the UAE, are small, high-income monarchies built on energy exports. They are financially powerful but rely on outside security guarantees, and they sit in a maritime chokepoint region central to global trade. The issues that recur here are the oil and market shock of the Iran war, missile and drone strikes against Gulf states, the US-Iran ceasefire and negotiation track, and Gulf oil production policy. This page follows news, politics, economy and security in the Gulf month by month, with the standing conflicts explained.
Editorially curated conflicts and rivalries Gulf States is party to. Open a panel to see the specific friction points inside it.
This brief outlines the enduring context for Gulf States, including structural constraints, strategic priorities, and persistent tensions. Unlike the monthly track summaries above, it is not tied to a specific period and changes only when underlying conditions evolve.

Iran and the United States, with Israel, are in an armed confrontation over Iran's nuclear programme, its government and the Strait of Hormuz. Gulf Arab states are drawn in as they try to protect their coasts and shipping. The fighting has spread across the region.
Syria's government, installed after the Assad family's rule ended, is trying to extend its authority across the whole country while foreign powers pursue their own aims on Syrian soil. Israel, Turkey and the Kurdish-led administration in the northeast each press competing demands over territory, security and political rights.
Sudan's army and the Rapid Support Forces are fighting for control of the country. The two had shared power after the 2019 uprising and a later coup, then turned on each other. Each side says it is fighting for Sudan's future.
Gulf oil production policy concerns how much crude the region's producers pump and at what price it sells. On one side, OPEC+ members coordinate output limits to steady the market. On the other, the United Arab Emirates and other producers want freedom to pump more and invest on their own terms, while the United States presses for lower prices.
Gulf energy logistics are under direct strain: the Saudi pipeline attack on 14 September disrupted oil routes and lifted prices, while Qatar extended LNG force majeure on 28 September as the Hormuz disruption continued. ADNOC responded by buying Iraqi crude, and the UAE pressed ahead with domestic infrastructure, launching the first Etihad Rail Dubai-Abu Dhabi passenger service on 29 September.
Gulf diplomacy is being reshaped by two shocks: Netanyahu's secret visit to the UAE and meeting with its president on 28 September, and Algeria's severing of diplomatic ties with the UAE on 10 September. Iran and the Gulf states postponed their Strait of Hormuz meeting in Oman on 13 September, even as Iran and the UAE sought to 'turn the page' at the BRICS summit the same day.
Security is dominated by the foiled attack on a Flydubai flight to Tel Aviv on 30 September, which Israel says involved a pilot attempting to crash the aircraft and which passengers stopped. Iran attacked US targets in Gulf states on 2 September, Kuwait repelled an air attack on its territory on 3 September, and the GCC condemned Houthi strikes on Riyadh and Khamis Mushait on 26 September.
The dominant societal tension is the UAE's management of public health and climate risk: on 26 September it lifted its Ebola-related visa ban on Uganda while keeping restrictions on the DRC and South Sudan, and on 7 September it flagged that its heat-tolerant coral reefs face a new threat as climate change intensifies. Qatar separately moved to put families first beyond the screen on 13 September.
