Taiwan in August 2026: the most important developments in security
In August 2026, Taiwan held its annual war games. On August 8, Taiwan's president oversaw a coastal strike drill, and the exercises included rapid turnaround drills for French-made jets. On the same day, China imposed traffic control in the Taiwan Strait, and Taiwan's government protested.
On August 22, a US Navy P-8A Poseidon aircraft flew through the Taiwan Strait ahead of an anticipated meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump. Some outlets described the transit as a routine mission. Taiwan also proposed a defence budget of $35 billion for 2027.
