WELT · August 2026

• Frames Putin as a threat or aggressor (war, escalation, nuclear warnings)
• Highlights failures, blunders, and loss of control (dead commander call, losing Caucasus, losing nerves)
• Uses distancing and critical quotes from Western officials and analysts
• Occasionally neutral or analytical, but overall negative selection

The outlet is not uniformly hostile; some headlines are neutral or analytical. The negative stance is conveyed through selection and framing (threat, failure, risk) rather than overtly derogatory language. Headlines 8 and 23 include critical or skeptical quotes about Putin, but the outlet itself does not celebrate him.

• reports on AfD-related controversies without consistent evaluative framing
• quotes critics and supporters of AfD with attribution
• mixes factual election coverage with opinion pieces
• uses distancing verbs for some claims but not uniformly

Entity is a country (DE), not a single actor; coverage spans domestic politics, foreign affairs, and social issues. Headlines show no unified stance toward Germany as a whole; some items criticize political actors (e.g., Merz, AfD) but not the country itself. Stance is therefore neutral overall, with low confidence due to heterogeneous topics and mixed framing.

• Framing Trump administration actions as failures or embarrassments (e.g., 'Blamage', 'Flucht', 'Prunk-Projekt')
• Quoting critics and opponents (WHO, Canada, Iran) without rebuttal, amplifying their negative assessments
• Highlighting internal dissent and legal setbacks (Maga-Rebellion, court-ordered construction halt)
• Use of evaluative language like 'gewagt' and 'Loser' in headlines

The entity is the US as a country, but coverage focuses overwhelmingly on the Trump administration; stance toward the US government is skeptical/critical, not toward the American people or institutions. Some headlines are neutral factual reports (e.g., 15, 17). The outlet does not use consistently delegitimising language like 'regime', so -2 is not warranted.

• Frequent polling and ranking headlines highlighting Merz's low approval and last-place standings
• Use of critical framing terms like 'Zumutungskanzler' and 'Merz-Krise'
• Quotes from critics and opponents (SPD, AfD, ex-supporters) given prominence
• Some neutral or even sympathetic headlines (e.g., Mitleid, Machtwort) mixed in

Coverage is mixed: several headlines report Merz's actions neutrally or even sympathetically (e.g., #5, #6, #19), and some criticism comes from quoted sources rather than the outlet's own voice. However, the outlet's own evaluative terms ('Zumutungskanzler', 'Merz-Krise') and heavy emphasis on negative polls tilt the overall stance toward skeptical/critical.

• Uses distancing and critical framing in headlines (e.g., 'Blamage', 'Loser', 'Probleme an allen Fronten')
• Highlights failures, controversies, and internal opposition (Maga-Rebellion, court setbacks, visa revocations)
• Occasionally quotes Trump directly without commentary, but often pairs with negative context or criticism
• Frames Trump's actions as problematic or self-defeating (e.g., 'unmöglich zustimmen', 'teure Blamage')

Some headlines are neutral or even amplify Trump's statements (e.g., #22, #24), but the overall selection emphasizes criticism and failure. The outlet's stance is skeptical rather than uniformly hostile; direct quotes are sometimes used without explicit evaluation, but the surrounding headlines tilt negative.

• Frequent use of distancing attribution ('laut Kreml', 'laut Selenskyj', 'laut Bericht')
• Foregrounding of threats, aggression, and escalation by Putin/Russia
• Quotes from Western officials and analysts framing Putin as dangerous or irrational
• Occasional neutral reporting of Russian actions without explicit evaluative language

The outlet often reports Putin's statements and actions factually, but the selection and framing emphasize threats, aggression, and internal problems. Some headlines (e.g., 11) quote sympathetic assessments, but these are outweighed by critical framing. The entity's own hostile rhetoric toward others is reported without endorsement, but the outlet's stance toward Putin/Russia is skeptical rather than celebratory.

• reports Zelenskyy's orders and statements without overt praise or condemnation
• includes critical angles: corruption raid, public distrust, political rivalry
• uses direct quotes but also highlights controversies and setbacks
• frames Ukraine as actor in war but not as hero or villain

Coverage is mixed: many headlines neutrally report Zelenskyy's actions and statements, but several highlight internal criticism (corruption, distrust, rivalry) and risky decisions (Poland dispute). No consistent positive or negative framing toward Ukraine as a country; stance toward Zelenskyy is slightly skeptical but not hostile. The entity is a country, so stance is aggregated across its leadership and situation.

• highlights EU failures and costs (e.g., debt, migration, gas imports)
• uses critical framing and quotes from critics of EU policies
• emphasizes bureaucratic absurdity and internal discord
• occasionally neutral reporting of EU actions

The outlet is not uniformly hostile; some headlines are neutral or factual. The negative stance is driven by selection and framing that foregrounds EU problems, costs, and dysfunction, rather than explicit delegitimizing language. The entity is the EU as an institution, not a single spokesperson.

• crisis and revolt framing (Palastrevolte, Endspiel, Krise)
• negative public opinion polls (Fehlbesetzungen, Ablehnung)
• attribution of failures to Klingbeil's ministry (Zuckersteuer-Gate)
• counter-arguments and rebuttals to Klingbeil's proposals

Headlines 2, 3, 5, 7 quote Klingbeil's own statements without overt hostility, but the overall selection emphasizes internal opposition, public rejection, and policy failures, yielding a skeptical rather than neutral stance. The outlet does not use overtly hostile language, but the framing is consistently critical.

• Frames Siegmund as dangerous or extremist via polls and Spiegel cover
• Highlights his absence from events and internal contradictions
• Uses distancing or critical framing in headlines about his campaign
• Occasionally reports his statements neutrally or with direct quotes

Some headlines are neutral or even amplify his quotes (e.g., #11), and the outlet also reports criticism of the Spiegel cover (#10), indicating mixed treatment. The negative stance is driven by selection and framing (dangerous, extremism, absence) rather than uniformly hostile language.

• Headlines mix direct quotes from Wagenknecht with neutral framing
• Focus on internal party conflict and political maneuvers
• Occasional evaluative words like 'Krieg' or 'eskaliert' applied to party dynamics, not to Wagenknecht personally
• No consistent positive or negative editorial voice toward her

Coverage is largely factual and quote-driven; negative framing appears mainly in headlines about party infighting (e.g., 'offene Krieg', 'Zerreißprobe'), which reflects on the party, not clearly on Wagenknecht herself. Some headlines amplify her attacks on others (e.g., calling government parts 'rechtsextrem'), but the outlet does not endorse or condemn her stance. Stance toward her is therefore neutral overall.
