Greenland's own agency and right to self-determination must come before any outside power's designs.
The position holds that Greenland's own agency and its right to self-determination must come before the designs of any outside power. Its advocates speak of Greenlanders deciding their own future and their own country, and of independence and a referendum as the means by which they might do so.
The position appears in the dispute over strategic control of Greenland and Arctic geopolitics, where 11 outlets from Western and allied countries carry it. Greenland's prime minister, Múte B. Egede, gave it voice when he told US envoys that Greenland's future must be decided by Greenlanders and that self-determination is not up for negotiation.
The dispute it answers is the continuing interest of the Trump administration in the Arctic island. In recent months a US envoy visited Greenland saying he wanted to listen and learn, EU officials travelled there as well, and Denmark, which oversees Greenland's foreign and defence affairs, sent no one. Greenland's prime minister said US designs were unchanged after the meeting, while Reuters wrote that Greenland sees progress in the talks but says the island is not for sale.
