Japan has restarted the world's largest nuclear power plant, the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa facility in Niigata Prefecture. The plant, operated by the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), had been offline for about 15 years following the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011.
This marks the first time TEPCO has restarted a reactor since that disaster. The restart comes as Japan continues to bring its nuclear fleet back online to meet energy needs and reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels.
