NATO ready to defend Romania and ‘every inch’ of allied territory, Rutte says

In Romania on 29 May 2026, a drone hit an apartment building, injuring two people. Outlets described it as a Russian Geran-2 drone that hit a residential building in a NATO member state while Russia attacked neighboring Ukraine, and Asahi Shimbun described it as the first injuries. Russia was accused of launching the drone.

Putin said it is too early to say whether the drone was Russian and called for an objective probe. Romania called on NATO for protection, and Rutte said NATO is ready to defend Romania and every inch of allied territory. The Telegraph wrote that the US will defend every inch of NATO.
