Australia: RAAF Base Break-In, Snowtown Killer Release, and Other Stories

In September 2026, a man broke into RAAF Base Darwin, assaulted a defence force member, and stole a vehicle. The same month, authorities announced that James Vlassakis, a convicted Snowtown serial killer, will be released from prison. Other news from Australia included a man charged over the death of a three-year-old girl in a Western Sydney driveway, a sentencing for a New Year one-punch attack, teenagers in court over an attack on a crocodile at Perth Zoo, a former Thai Airways stewardess remanded on a heroin charge, and the military declaring initial operational capability for LRASM and JASSM-ER missiles. Internationally, Russia and Ukraine exchanged energy strikes, NATO downed a drone in Lithuania, and the US acknowledged deploying weapons in space, which China criticised.
