India to buy US-made Javelin anti-tank missiles

India has signed a deal with the United States to purchase Javelin anti-tank missile systems, a major defence boost announced in August 2026. The Javelin is a 'fire-and-forget' weapon, meaning it locks onto its target before launch and guides itself, allowing the operator to take cover immediately. This acquisition marks the first time India will receive these missiles in 16 years, and it is expected to significantly enhance the Indian army's ability to destroy enemy tanks, particularly in potential conflicts with Pakistan. The deal underscores growing defence cooperation between India and the US.
