China's Chip, AI and Energy Sectors Show Mixed Signals

In China in August 2026, several developments point in different directions. Chipmaker CXMT became the country's most valuable company, and China's chip industry is described as having a breakout moment. Chinese scientists presented an AI model for soybeans called "Fengshu" 2.0, and developers are taking the lead in using AI for social purposes. China also introduced an eVTOL "air skateboard" with an AI-powered gravity-sensing system. New energy vehicles accounted for more than 60 percent of deliveries in July.

At the same time, China added 200,000 barrels per day to its crude reserves in July despite the crisis around the Strait of Hormuz, surprising oil markets with a return to stockpiling.
