Israel Strikes Hezbollah in Lebanon, Keeps Gaza Operations

In early August 2026, Israel carried out military strikes against Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon, following what the Israeli military described as a ceasefire breach. The IDF also issued evacuation warnings to residents of a south Lebanon village ahead of the strikes, the first such warning in weeks. Lebanon's state media reported one person killed and 11 wounded in one of the strikes. The escalation came as peace talks were being hosted in Rome, though the strikes continued despite diplomatic efforts.

Separately, the Israeli military chief said Hamas has been significantly weakened and that the IDF will maintain a forward defense in Gaza, operating proactively. Israeli forces also discovered and destroyed a rocket-filled tunnel in southern Gaza, according to an IDF video. Meanwhile, an internal IDF probe found that a deadly clash at a settler hike in the West Bank was unauthorized and that too few troops responded. The military also continued its presence in Lebanon, having captured 230 square miles of territory, razed villages, and built new bases, according to reports.
