The Greens have narrowly won the state election in Baden-Württemberg, securing another term in government. However, the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party achieved its best-ever result in a western German state, winning nearly 19 percent of the vote.
Meanwhile, the Social Democrats (SPD) performed poorly and are now considered a minor party in the state. Chancellor Friedrich Merz, accused the Greens of running a negative campaign against their own candidate, Manuel Hagel.
