Hong Kong court sentences media tycoon Jimmy Lai to 20 years in prison

A Hong Kong court sentenced media tycoon Jimmy Lai to 20 years in prison. The sentencing followed a conviction under the national security law.

China's Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office stated the sentencing shows the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's resolve to safeguard national security. A spokesperson for the office said the case is purely an internal affair of Hong Kong.

Separately, a Hong Kong court overturned a 2022 fraud conviction against Jimmy Lai. The court also rejected appeals by 12 other defendants in a separate national security trial.
