Defense Secretary asks Army chief to step down during Middle East conflict

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth asked the U.S. Army's top uniformed officer, the chief of staff, to step down. This abrupt leadership change happened while the United States is engaged in a war against Iran, now in its fifth week.

At the same time, the Pentagon is doubling the number of A-10 attack planes in the Middle East and has sent a third aircraft carrier, the USS George H.W. Bush, to the region. Reports also indicate the U.S. has lost another fighter jet in the conflict.
