Al-Shahaab

Al-Shahaab is a hierarchical insurgent organization aligned with Al-Qaeda, and it acts as a lasting armed alternative to state authority in Somalia. It holds territory, collects taxes, combines governance with violence and propaganda, and carries out asymmetric attacks on local governments and foreign forces. Its strength rests on local taxation, coercion, clan dynamics and a weak state presence, and its attacks in the wider region are read as signals of pressure or deterrence. This page follows news, politics and security involving Al-Shahaab month by month, with the standing conflicts explained.
