Sudan's economic institutions are engaging with foreign partners and launching new services, but face severe external pressures. The central bank governor met with Qatar's finance minister and launched a new service for companies. However, the UK is implicated in a port used against Sudan, and the US accuses South Sudan and Somalia of stealing food aid, complicating regional stability.
The government is attempting a symbolic return to Khartoum while Egypt asserts itself as the dominant external mediator on Sudan. Sudan's government announced a return to the capital. Egypt held a consultative meeting stressing 'red lines' on Sudan and its foreign minister discussed Sudan developments with the UAE, Turkey, the US, and the UN chief, all within the context of a ceasefire effort.
The Sudan army is making tactical gains against the RSF in Kordofan, but the paramilitary force continues abductions and drone attacks, sustaining a high-intensity conflict. The army broke a two-year RSF siege of a key town and entered a South Kordofan city. Simultaneously, the RSF conducted a drone attack killing dozens in South Kordofan and is abducting children in Darfur, prompting new EU sanctions.
Society is defined by catastrophic, war-induced displacement, with over 9.5 million internally displaced creating the world's largest crisis. Fighting in Kordofan displaced more than 88,000 people in one region alone. The UN warns that conditions for a human catastrophe are present, with women facing extreme sexual violence and children in Darfur being hard to reach for aid.
