Syria's economy is in an opening phase driven by sanctions relief, with Japan removing 16 Syrian organisations from its sanctions list and President Al-Sharaa crediting lifted sanctions for new investment prospects. Energy infrastructure remains fragile: sabotage halted a gas pipeline and a fire stopped gas flow between Al-Shula and Deir ez-Zor, even as Jordan approved an Arab Gas Pipeline route to Lebanon via Syria and Damascus began rehabilitating Latakia airport.

Diplomacy is active but strained: Syria is seeking a diplomatic solution with Israel as the IAEA reports findings on a nuclear reactor, while a UN inquiry says Israeli operations in Syria may amount to war crimes. Lebanese President Aoun urged the US to halt Israeli strikes after fatal attacks, Macron hosted Lebanon security talks as UNIFIL nears its end, and Israel-Lebanon talks were delayed as blasts hit southern Lebanon.

The Israel-Hezbollah front is active despite a ceasefire, with clashes near the Lebanon border, Hezbollah drones targeting Israeli troops in southern Lebanon, and Israel clearing Hezbollah tunnels and seizing the Ali al-Taher ridge. Israeli strikes killed several in Lebanon, while inside Syria explosions at weapons and ammunition depots near Aleppo killed at least 14 and injured several, and the IAEA reported a secret Syrian reactor was nearly complete and weapons-capable.

The dominant tension is economic hardship meeting new political space: fuel price hikes sparked the largest protests in Syria since Assad's fall, and UNICEF reports one in five children in Lebanon goes to bed hungry. Cultural restitution proceeds in parallel, with the US returning 36 ancient artifacts to Syria and 74 Egyptian artifacts returned from Lebanon.
