Southeast Asia brings together the ASEAN nations from Myanmar to Indonesia, a mix of mainland and maritime states with very different political systems and income levels. It is an Indo-Pacific crossroads of major sea lanes and production hubs, with export-driven economies tied into global supply chains. The standing issues are the territorial and maritime disputes in the South China Sea, the civil conflict in Myanmar, and the border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia, all set against great-power competition to which most states respond by hedging. This page holds news, politics, economy and security for the region, month by month, with the standing conflicts explained.
Editorially curated conflicts and rivalries Southeast Asia is party to. Open a panel to see the specific friction points inside it.
This brief outlines the enduring context for Southeast Asia, including structural constraints, strategic priorities, and persistent tensions. Unlike the monthly track summaries above, it is not tied to a specific period and changes only when underlying conditions evolve.

Myanmar's military removed the elected government in 2021 and now rules the country. Opposing it are a parallel administration, armed resistance groups and long-established ethnic armed organisations. The two sides are fighting over who governs Myanmar and under what constitutional arrangements.
Several states claim overlapping rights to islands and waters in the South China Sea. China claims most of the sea; the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan claim parts of it. Outside states, including the United States, take positions on the dispute.
Thailand and Cambodia dispute their shared land border and overlapping maritime claims in the Gulf of Thailand. Cambodia seeks demarcation based on colonial-era maps and international court rulings; Thailand rejects those maps as the sole basis and insists on bilateral talks. Armed clashes have occurred, and the dispute remains unresolved.
Thailand's aviation and digital infrastructure are under acute strain. Thai Airways cancelled flights and cargo at Bangkok airport amid a baggage crisis, while the government halted 49 data centre projects pending new rules. Regional trade integration advanced as China opened the Pinglu Canal and the China-ASEAN Expo convened in Nanning, and Indonesia tightened coal export rules as exports reached $18.1 billion.
The Philippines held a historic vote alongside Duterte's impeachment trial, and Duterte appeared at the ICC in The Hague for the first time. Thailand's PM Anutin sued an iLaw director as his cabinet backed an anti-corruption pilot, and Thailand cut visa-free stays from 60 to 30 days. Malaysia's King allowed jailed ex-PM Najib to serve house arrest, prompting Transport Minister Anthony Loke to resign.
Myanmar's military conducted an airstrike on a market that killed at least 50 people, the deadliest security event of the period. Indonesia welcomed its first aircraft carrier and the USS Abraham Lincoln docked in Thailand after 286 days at sea, signaling naval expansion and US engagement. Cambodia targeted casinos in an anti-scam sweep, and Vietnam arrested three on terrorism charges including Norwegian and Australian citizens.
Record flooding in Bangkok dominates the period, with the city declaring a disaster zone, thousands forced into shelters, and eight dead. Malaysia began sending Myanmar migrants home.
