Mexico in September 2026: the most important developments in security
Mexico's security news in September 2026 was dominated by the killing of a Spanish exchange student, identified as Claudia Tacoronte, from the Canary Islands, who was stabbed to death. The case drew attention in both Spain and Mexico. Security camera footage showed a person fleeing the scene, and on September 16 Mexico issued an arrest warrant for a suspect. On September 17 authorities arrested a suspect linked to the Sinaloa Cartel in Baja California and issued a further warrant in the case.
Earlier in the month, a Mexican musician, his pregnant wife, a child and a nanny were shot dead. An Argentine suspect was detained on September 4. Elsewhere, a priest was shot dead and his body left on a road, and forces seized 59 million liters of stolen fuel in Guanajuato. Mexico confirmed the killing of the leader of the Los Reyes cartel in Michoacan on September 1, and a hidden cryptocurrency mining farm in mountainous terrain drew attention to how cartels are funded.
On the border and with the United States, Mexico and the US launched an anti-drone operation on September 8. Mexico approved the entry of US troops for joint exercises and deployed 1,800 troops to a state controlled by cartels. President Donald Trump increased pressure on Mexico over drug trafficking, and President Claudia Sheinbaum turned attention to drug consumption in the United States. At the Independence Day parade, 15,330 troops marched before Sheinbaum, who praised the military.
By late September, security forces were deployed to states hit by a hurricane. Reports also pointed to the reach of Mexican criminal networks abroad: a US-backed operation in Ecuador arrested more than 30 people accused of ties to a Mexican cartel, and a court in Enugu, Nigeria, arraigned two people accused of running a methamphetamine operation linked to Mexican networks. Elvis Guerra met with Sheinbaum and security chief Harfuch after an armed attack on his home.
