Canada in August 2026: the most important developments in society
Canada in August 2026 was dominated by wildfires. On August 8, British Columbia declared a state of emergency as a massive fire forced thousands of residents to evacuate, including people in a town in the country's top wine region. An AFP fact-check earlier in the month addressed misinformation about US aid to Canadian firefighting efforts.
At the start of the month, a nationwide airline strike grounded flights and stranded an estimated 250,000 passengers. Separately, dental-therapy programs were expanded to improve access to oral care in remote communities.
